Syphilis is a chronic disease caused by the spirochaete Treponema pallidum. Syphilis is acquired by direct contact, usually sexual, with active primary or secondary lesion. The infection also occurs when Treponema crosses the placenta to infect fetus in a pregnant woman. Of particular importance is the recognition that syphilis infection greatly increases the transmission and acquisition of HIV (Ficarra & Carlos, 2009). After the Second World War, the introduction of penicillin, serological controls of pregnant women and treatment of infected partners resulted in a decrease of the disease incidence.
