Sound programme: the sounds that bring us together - Boo Su

Boo Su (2021) – 05:10 was constructed just before the Covid-19 pandemic using one sound(-making) object/sound source only the “Radical Nails” a Hardware Mash-up and Speculative Sound Circuit. The DIY synth was developed in a rapid making and guerrilla research event. We had set up a pop-up workshop-installation in the Haymarket Shopping Centre in Leicester, during the latter end of 2019. In many ways, the sound work was developed very quickly using DJ culture and remix techniques from discarded recordings that were made and improvised in situ at the pop-up event, aesthetics of failure is embraced resulting in a sonic work that takes and celebrates noisy aesthetics and marries them with Bass and Dub culture like many of my other studio works. The piece “Boo Su” (2021) – 05:10 had its world premiere at the BMS International Composition Competition (Berwick-upon-Tweed). It was a finalist alongside six other artists as part of this submission for The Berwick Music Series, which was held between September and October in 2021. The new music competition had a “North” based theme with entries from sound artists across the UK and Abroad. Boo Su is a fictional cog as part of a system that lives in a futuristic subterranean world of stuttered magnetic rhythms coalescing in a tapestry of harsh brutal noise and architecture. It is where dark cold machines conjure up resistance to bass and unwanted sounds. The DIY glitch compass faces towards a place where aesthetics and operations of failure are embraced - North.
