Insomnia is a problem that goes beyond the mainstream of contemporary medicine. As this is an interdisciplinary problem, in practice it is very often the responsibility of general practitioners. It is one of the giant geriatric syndromes that can be encountered by up to 30-50% of the elderly. Insomnia significantly worsens their quality of life, being a source of not only fatigue, anxiety and depression, but is also associated with a number of other diseases and an increased risk of death from cardiovascular causes.
