A grown-up, autonomous and responsible university student sounds good in festive speeches, but the reality is different. This article challenges the idea that students automatically take responsibility, examining them as part of a hierarchical education system. It is discussed how the supervisor’s position of authority directs students’ experience and, consequently, their actions and how they take responsibility for their studies.
