A tradução do livro Escritos para o inglês: discussão e análise de aspectos culturais no texto religioso

This dissertation aims to analyze the translation of the work “Escritos”, by Moyses Louro de Azevedo Filho, into the English language and analyze the decisions of the translators in the work regarding the cultural aspects of the text, presenting samples of the translation. The work “Escritos” was translated into English by William Rodrigues da Rocha and Emanuela Cardoso and in final phase for publication in Rome, Italy. Although the translators were Brazilian, they had a team of English-speaking reviewers who, in several meetings, revised the translation to be more fluent to the English-speaking reader. While adhering to the review suggestions, several were rejected and, instead, footnotes were added to clarify or add information to the text. Many decisions that will be shown in the course of this work were taken due to the concern of cultural aspects. Therefore, from the analysis of the translation, we will observe the participation of the translators (ALVES, 1996), as well as the cultural filters proposed by Chesterman (1997). Focusing on the use of footnotes, the final objective of this dissertation will be to observe the cultural aspects present in the Portuguese text and how the English-speaking readers were assisted in reading through translation strategies.A presente dissertação de mestrado tem como objetivo analisar a tradução da obra “Escritos”, de Moysés Louro de Azevedo filho, para a língua inglesa e analisar as decisões dos tradutores no trabalho no que concerne os aspectos culturais do texto, apresentando amostras da tradução. A obra “Escritos” foi traduzida para o inglês por William Rodrigues da Rocha e Emanuela Cardoso e em fase final para publicação em Roma, Itália. Apesar dos tradutores serem brasileiros, contaram com uma equipe de revisores de língua inglesa que, em diversas reuniões, revisaram a tradução para que fosse mais fluida ao leitor de língua inglesa. Mesmo acatando as sugestões de revisão, várias foram recusadas e, em vez disso, notas de rodapé foram acrescentadas para esclarecer ou acrescentar informações ao texto. Muitas decisões que serão mostradas no decorrer deste trabalho foram tomadas devido a preocupação de aspectos culturais. Portanto, a partir da análise da tradução, observaremos a participação dos tradutores (ALVES, 1996), assim como os filtros culturais propostos por Chesterman (1997).
