The Recognition in Axel Honneth: A Critical Dialogue with Hegel

Tese (Doutorado em Filosofia) - Universidade Federal do Ceará, Fortaleza, 2018.This work has as its central objective to discuss the re-updating of the Hegelian category recognition in the political writings of Axel Honneth. More specifically, the Honnetian retelling of Hegel's juvenile writings in Iena. The reason for this interest is the debate about the role of intersubjectivity. When analyzing such a debate, it is perceived that contemporary political philosophy assists in the resumption of Hegelian thought from new conceptual standards. With the advent of the post-metaphysical delineation, the process unleashed by the claims of recognition is suggested as a new referential of the thematization of what Hegel called ethics. In this way, Honneth proposes a theoretical foundation that is not anchored in an ultimate foundation, constitutive of an essentiality. Similar to the Hegelian proposal, Honneth intends to provide a logical reading of reality, providing elements that allow us to understand the space of possibilities in which society is configured: a "moral grammar of social conflicts". The difference, however, lies in the target Honneth wants to achieve: the struggles, the political clashes that make minority actors central to the public arena of politics. It is not by chance that Honneth's arguments attempt to make explicit the resumption of critical theory into the present great debates of the twentieth century. More specifically, pointing out possible limitations in the linguistic approach of the intersubjectivity paradigm. According to Honneth, the central criticism is based on the thesis that the possibilities of the interactive communicative experience cannot be summarized, or taken exclusively, in the linguistic interaction. In view of the arguments presented, the present work will cover the paths taken by Honneth in an attempt to revise the Hegelian ethics model in order to construct a theory of recognition. For this, this writing will present the main moments of the philosophy of the recognition of the young Hegel, the one of Iena. After this step, it will be discussed how Honneth appropriates the term recognition of the nineteenth-century philosopher, pointing out the positive moments of the act of recognizing and negatives regarding non-recognition. And, finally, the current debate with contemporary philosophers. Authors like Paul Ricoeuer, Charles Taylor, Nancy Fraser and Jürgen Habermas will be analyzed, thematized. The main goal is to show the relevance of this discussion and the influences that Honneth received in the development of his theory of recognition in the 20th / 21st century.Este trabalho tem como objetivo central discutir a reatualização da categoria hegeliana reconhecimento nos escritos políticos de Axel Honneth. Mais especificamente, a releitura honnetiana dos escritos juvenis de Hegel em Iena. O motivo para esse interesse é o debate acerca do papel da intersubjetividade. Ao analisá-lo, percebe-se que filosofia política contemporânea assiste à retomada do pensamento hegeliano a partir de novos padrões conceituais. Com o advento do delineamento pós-metafísico, o processo desencadeado pelas reivindicações de reconhecimento é sugerido como novo referencial de tematização do que Hegel denominara eticidade. Desse modo, Honneth propõe um embasamento teórico que não esteja ancorado em uma fundamentação última, constitutivo de uma essencialidade. Semelhante a proposta hegeliana, Honneth tem a pretensão de fornecer uma leitura lógica da realidade, proporcionando elementos que permitam entender o espaço de possibilidades no qual a sociedade se configura: uma “gramática moral dos conflitos sociais”. A diferença, no entanto, está no alvo a quem Honneth deseja alcançar: as lutas, os embates políticos que fazem das minorias atores centrais no espaço público da política. Não por acaso que os argumentos de Honneth tentam explicitar a retomada da teoria crítica para os grandes debates atuais do Século XX. Mais especificamente, apontando possíveis limitações na abordagem linguística do paradigma da intersubjetividade e suas implicações para a Teoria Crítica. Segundo Honneth, a crítica central fundamenta-se na tese de que as possibilidades da experiência interativa comunicativa não podem ser resumidas, ou tomadas exclusivamente, na interação linguística. Diante dos argumentos apresentados, o presente trabalho percorrerá os caminhos trilhados por Honneth na tentativa de revisar o modelo de eticidade hegeliana a fim de construir uma teoria do reconhecimento. Para isso, este escrito apresentará os principais momentos da filosofia do reconhecimento do jovem Hegel, o de Iena. Após a essa etapa, será discutido de que modo Honneth apropria-se do termo reconhecimento do filósofo do Século XIX, apontando os momentos positivos do ato de reconhecer e negativos quanto ao não-reconhecimento. E, por fim, a atualidade do debate com filósofos contemporâneos. Autores como Paul Ricoeuer, Charles Taylor, Nancy Fraser e Jürgen Habermas serão analisados, tematizados. Tal objetivo é mostrar a relevância desta discussão e as influências que Honneth recebera no desenvolvimento de sua teoria do reconhecimento no Século XX/XXI
