A graduate viola recital

Includes recorded audio files in WAV and MP3 formats, 57:40 in length.The Sonata for Viola and Piano in d minor by Michael Glinka (1804-1857) is an early work, the composer having completed the first movement in 1825. The second movement was not begun until 1827 or 1828 and remains unfinished. The movements are titled (1) Allegro moderato and (2) Larghetto ma non troppo (Andante) and are constructed in a freely extended sonata form. The edition used in this performance has been edited and in the case of the second movement, reconstructed by the famous Soviet violist, Vadim Borissovsky. It should be mentioned that a third movement exists solely in the form of a few sketches of a principle theme for a finale. Although this movement never came to realization, this thematic material was later used in a piano polka for children. It is believed that Glinka, an amateur violist, composed this sonata primarily for his own pleasure, to be performed under domestic circumstances. It has also been noted, however, that in later years he became increasingly fond of the work, if not proud of his use of what he called ???some quite clever counterpoint.??? (See more in text)..
