Graduate recital in violin

Includes recorded audio files in WAV and MP3 formats, 54:43 in length.The repertoire chosen for this recital calls for a wide range of stylistic interpretations. Three different musical eras are represented: Classical, Romantic, and the Twentieth Century. The program opened with the Sonata in G major, Op. 30 no. 3, by Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827). The sonata is written in three movements, which is the standard form in the Classical Era. This is the last of Beethoven???s smaller, classical violin sonatas. The difference between his eighth sonata, which I performed and the ninth ("Kreutzer") is remarkable even by Beethoven???s standards. The first movement, Allegro assai, is in sonata form with a short development section. It is written in a lively 6/8 meter. The second movement, Tempo di minuetto, ma molto moderato e grazioso, is slow and graceful and at times has a light-hearted feel. The third movement, Allegro vivace is a quick and lively rondo with almost constant running sixteenth notes. The second piece on the program, Duo Concertant, composed by Igor Stravinsky (1882-1971), is from the Twentieth Century Era. Stravinsky wrote the piece for violinist Samuel Dunshkin during the years 1931-32. It was composed with both the piano and violin having equal parts. The first movement, Cantilene, consists of two contrasting ideas, a series of arpeggios and a slowly expanding melodic theme expressed through the double stops in the violin. The second and third movements are given the titles Eglogue I and Eglogue II. Eglogue can also be spelled Eclogue, which refers to a classical poem in which shepherds converse. The first Eglogue is lively and virtuosic for both instruments. Stravinsky drops the bar lines for a considerable amount of time in the opening of Eglogue II, but this seems to have no apparent effect on the metrical feel of the movement. (See more in text.
