Many Small Island Developing States (SIDS) often rely heavily on tourism for their economies to prosper, and Samoa is no exception. The challenge is to balance the needs and desires of tourists against those of the residents and the environment. Environmental quality is a leading draw card for tourists, and is also essential in order for residents to maintain a living off the land. However, these activities in themselves are often at loggerheads with the needs of the environment itself.
