During the period of Anarchy (1135-1153), the English Crown didn’t built new castles. During the reign of king Henry II (1154-1189), the accounts rolls of the royal Exchequer provide evidence of work on 90 royal castles. The most expensive building still stands in 25 of those castles : the square or polygonal keep which became more and more private and residential ; Thus is the only one entirely new castle : Orford. It seems that curtains walls were reinforced with towers and square gateways (or semi-circular after 1200) at Dover, London, Corfe and Kenilworth.
