Le château des Plantagenêt à Niort

In order to protect the Niort harbour the Plantagenêt erected a castle of which the most important feature is the «double keep». The keep presents two square towers linked together with curtain walls (wich delimit an open-air area). The towers were defended with arrow slits facing the town. There are butresses machicolations in the northern tower. The construction of this fortified building can be attributed to Richard 1st. Despite its romanesque features, the castle innovated with an active defence and with its function itself : it had to protect the harbour and the warehouse. The castle was enclosed in a surrounding wall and its central part became a residential element at the beginning of the 13th century.Pour protéger le port de Niort, les Plantagenêt élèvent un château dont l'élément principal est un «donjon double». Ce dernier présente deux tours carrées reliées par des courtines délimitant un espace à ciel ouvert ; ces tours sont dotées d'archères du côté de la ville ; celle du sud possède des mâchicoulis sur arcs. Une attribution de la construction à Richard 1er entre 1175 et 1184 peut être proposée. L'édifice a encore une physionomie romane, mais innove par une défense active et par sa fonction (protection du port et entrepôt).
