In order to protect the Niort harbour the Plantagenêt erected a castle of which the most important feature is the «double keep». The keep presents two square towers linked together with curtain walls (wich delimit an open-air area). The towers were defended with arrow slits facing the town. There are butresses machicolations in the northern tower. The construction of this fortified building can be attributed to Richard 1st. Despite its romanesque features, the castle innovated with an active defence and with its function itself : it had to protect the harbour and the warehouse.
