Les tours à archères dans le domaine Plantagenêt français 1160-1205

The Plantagenêt architecture sees the development and the systematization of the flanking towers with arrow slits. These towers can have various layouts : rectangular or semicircular turrets at the beginning, then rectangular, U form, semicircular, pentagonal towers, and finally beaked towers ; they can also be open-backed towers. They can be roofed over with timber or they can be vaulted (barrel vault, ribbed vault...), and from 1160 they got arrow slit alcoves which became more sophisticated at the end of the 12th century. The influence of the oriental architecture is obvious but the plantagenêt style still presents a notable creativity. Until 1190, the Plantagenêt architecture was ahead of the Capetien world. From then, will be developped two different styles which will definitively have a great impact on the castle architecture.L'architecture des Plantagenêt voit l'apparition et la systématisation des tours de flanquement à archères. Ces tours ont des plans variables : tourelles pleines rectangulaires ou semi-circulaires au début, puis tours rectangulaires, en U, semi-circulaires, pentagonales et enfin en amande ; elles sont parfois ouvertes à la gorge. Planchéiées ou voûtées (berceau, arêtes, ogives), elles présentent des archères à niche qui apparaissent au tournant des années 1160 et se perfectionnent à la fin du siècle (étrier, croisillon). Si le rôle de l'Orient peut être évoqué, cette architecture n'en présente pas moins une importante créativité. Elle est en avance sur le monde capétien jusque vers 1190.
