The Plantagenêt architecture sees the development and the systematization of the flanking towers with arrow slits. These towers can have various layouts : rectangular or semicircular turrets at the beginning, then rectangular, U form, semicircular, pentagonal towers, and finally beaked towers ; they can also be open-backed towers. They can be roofed over with timber or they can be vaulted (barrel vault, ribbed vault...), and from 1160 they got arrow slit alcoves which became more sophisticated at the end of the 12th century.
