In the last decades of the twentieth century, indigenous and social mobilization forced the official recognition of nine autochthonous and Afro-descendant ethnic groups in Honduras. However, the Matagalpa Indians of the department of El Paraíso keeps being denied and are still invisible by the State and part of the mestizo civil society.
