Indios en El Paraíso. Un grupo étnico olvidado de Honduras

In the last decades of the twentieth century, indigenous and social  mobilization forced the official recognition of nine autochthonous and Afro-descendant ethnic groups in Honduras. However, the Matagalpa Indians of the department of El Paraíso keeps being denied and are still invisible by the State and part of the mestizo civil society. Our research rebuilds the historical context of oblivion and offers an anthropological characterization of their cultural identity and the process of ethnic mobilization recently undertaken by these Central American Indians.En las últimas décadas del siglo XX la movilización indígena y social obligó al reconocimiento oficial de nueve grupos étnicos autóctonos y afrodescendientes en Honduras. Sin embargo, los indios matagalpas del departamento de El Paraíso siguen siendo negados e invisibles para el Estado y parte de la sociedad civil mestiza. Nuestra investigación reconstruye el contexto histórico del olvido y ofrece una caracterización antropológica de su identidad cultural y del proceso de movilización étnica emprendida recientemente por estos indios centroamericanos
