While it is widely accepted that genre can be construed as a discursive strategy, much remains to be done to clarify the relations between the the external criteria determined by the text's specific communicative goals, and the internal linguistic criteria which go to making the text part of a genre. This is the perspective we have chosen to compare doctoral thesis abstracts from five subject fields, written in English by native English and French speakers. The aim of this research is to better understand to what extent belonging to this promotional genre leads to successful communication.
