Since the beginning of the sixties, as a result of the implementation of methodologies which were more geared towards the acquisition of oral skills, language pedagogy has still little interest in the teaching of written composition. The research work I have done in this thesis has precisely as its objective to show the need to develop a real written discursive competence in adults who are learning French as a second language. I wish to particularly underline the specific differences in teaching French composition to non native students of French as opposed to students who have French as a first language.
