National audienceDiscourse markers are marginal, whether it be in the grammatical tradition, discourse itself or translation. Their behaviour in reported speech is interesting because the confrontation of various utterance levels creates a tension that translation unveils by taking part in it. The starting point is the study of two corpora and the question is how translators deal with the following issues: how is the sentence organised around the verb marking reported speech and its position? How is the line drawn between the quoted and the quoting material? Are there differences between French and English when it comes to reported speech?
