The city directory listed the family as Vern C. and Lynne E. Vanderbilt at that address. Vern's profession was listed as the bakery located in the L.S. Ayres Department Store at 1 West Washington Street. The census for 1930 confirmed that Vern was a baker and Lynne was the bookkeeper at the bakery. The Vanderbilt's had two children, Bertha 13 and Vern, Jr. 10. The Vanderbilt Bakery created decorative cakes and cake displays for the Ayres Department Store windows throughout the year but especially at Christmas time.
