Many ancient sources mention beggars and begging. The analysis of these references, scattered in texts of different kinds and periods – epic and elegiac poetry, tragic and comic theatre, pleas, philosophical and rhetorical treatises, novels, epigrams or proverbs – leads to the understanding of the social act of begging. In order to reveal the process of exclusion and social decline from which ptôchoi suffer, we will examine the limits of the social category of beggars, their social image, as well as the outward signs of begging and the way to ask for alms.Les sources anciennes sont nombreuses à évoquer les mendiants et la mendicité.
