Maize is the first crop in Serbia and Montenegro. More than forth century maize exists in this region. In the beginning of maize cultivation it was flint type maize from Caribbean and after that US dent type was introduced in our country. Domestical maize population and US varieties were the basic material of maize breeding. Maize breeding in the Research institute of field and vegetable crops has long tradition. So far we have released 189 Maize hybrids in Serbia and Montenegro and 53 of them we have released in foreign countries. NS maize hybrids cover around 60% of maize surface in our country and significant surface in abroad.
