Muscle wasting is a common complication of aging and a number of chronic and degenerative diseases. Previous work has demonstrated that the deubiquitinating enzyme (DUB) USP19 is induced at the mRNA level in atrophying rat skeletal muscle under various conditions of catabolism [1]. To further explore USP19's role in muscle, loss of function approaches were employed. siRNA-mediated silencing of USP19 in L6 muscle cells enhanced the expression of a panel of major myofibrillar proteins and the myogenic regulatory factor myogenin that regulates muscle differentiation [2].
