The quality of biowaste compost is a main factor to ensure a lasting compost application and marketing. Based on studying literary references and consulting representatives of different application areas a report has been published by the PlanCoTec concerning quality requirements for biowaste and yard waste compost. As an essential quality factor the compost maturity especially the measuring method was investigated by the LASU (FH Muenster). The german standard methods, the self-heating test and the determination of respiration activity, were tested for using to characterize the state of biowaste maturity and were compared with different other criteria describing the composting process. In field tests for compost application, carried out by the PlanCoTec, biowaste compost of different maturity and in different amounts was used in two application areas: agriculture/fruit growing and garden- and landscape construction/tree nursery. The effects on the quantity and quality of the products as well as the soil improvement and the nutrient situation were examined.
