Increased use of solar energy is needed to save heating energy. In the German climate, however, passive use of solar energy with windows and facades in summer is also accompanied by the risk of overheating the living areas. Simple, automatically regulating systems to protect against overheating are not commercially available at present. The project, 'Thermotropic Layers for Glazing of Windows, Facades and Solar Collectors', aimed to develop thermotropic shading systems for windows, facades and solar collectors.
