By combining new coating and structuring technologies, functional glazings were to be constructed which meet the requirements of protection against overheating in summer, shading in all seasons, high daylight admittance, and good visibility. Prismatic structures permit differentiated treatment of direct solar radiation and diffuse light, i.e. the directed radiation can be shaded or deflected. The desired functionality of the glazings is to be achieved by structured glass surfaces or by moving lamellar structures combined with optical circuiting principles. The new systems must be capable of being modelled by numeric techniques, and their effects on the energy balance of buildings and on comfort at work must be measurable. This fundamental p...
