Perception, cognition et perspicacité : énoncés à lecture inférentielle avec les verbes de perception non agentive

International audienceSome “perception” reports reflect the transition from perception to knowledge after inferences or deductions based on perceptual data. Such is the case of utterances involving an object THAT-clause licensed by a non agentive perception verb, which highlights the link between perceptual experience, cognition and knowledge.The present paper aims at identifying how these utterances function both semantically and pragmatically and how the verb and its complement interact. An additional goal is to determine why a verb which originally denotes the grasping of reality can govern a clause expressing a state of fact, which is by nature imperceptible. This however is only a surface incompatibility from both a semantic and pragmatic point of view. A close study of the subordinate clause –nature of the predicate, types of process and temporality, among others– reveals the elements that seemingly contradict the perceptual modality of the verb and at the same time shows how the meaning is constructed in these utterances. It appears that they mainly convey the meaning of perceptual inference –otherwise known as indirect perception–, that is to say of an inference or deduction based on a percept localized in the sphere of the experiencer, but which is not always made explicit in discourse. The perception verb then undergoes a semantic shift or even compression and thus closely resembles a cognition verb. This study finally puts forward a more theoretical explanation of the combination of a THAT-clause and a non agentive perception verb, focusing on etymological approaches and on the different types of perceptual modalities. It is argued that the verb always functions as a localizer and that the inference is presented as inevitably true, which is a sign of the experiencer’s insight.Cette étude a pour objet l’analyse du fonctionnement sémantique et pragmatique de ces énoncés, ainsi que de l’interaction entre le verbe et son complément. Elle tente en outre de mettre au jour la raison pour laquelle un verbe qui, à l’origine, dénote l’appréhension d’une réalité extralinguistique, peut régir une proposition qui exprime un état de fait, par nature non perceptible. Cette incompatibilité sémantique et pragmatique n’est en fait qu’apparente. Un examen de la subordonnée – nature du prédicat, type de procès et de temporalité, entre autres – permet à la fois de dégager les éléments qui semblent en contradiction avec la modalité perceptive du verbe recteur et de montrer comment se construit le sens des énoncés en question. Il apparaît qu’ils véhiculent principalement un sens d’inférence perceptuelle – autrement appelée perception indirecte –, c’est-à-dire d’une inférence ou déduction fondée sur un percept localisé dans la sphère de l’expérient, mais qui n’est pas toujours explicité dans le discours. Le verbe de perception subit alors un glissement, voire une compression, sémantique et se rapproche d’un verbe de cognition. L’étude propose pour finir une justification théorique de l’association entre subordonnée en THAT objet et verbe de perception non agentive, explorant les pistes de l’étymologie et des différents types de modalités perceptives.
