Letter to the editor - Trees and salinity

In a previous article the Minister for Water Supplies Mr Mensaros' announced that $1.65 million would be spent buying land and planting trees in and around the Wellington Dam. Mr Richards asks Mr Mensaros to tell the taxpayers and water consumers where in the State the system of planting trees have restored salt land and salty water to fresh soil and water. An answer by Mr Mensaros is included at the bottom of Mr Richards letter 'After the drought period at the beginning of the century, an extensive area of Mundaring Weir catchment was ringbarked to increase water yield, an increase in salinity was noticed but stabilised and then gradually improved as the forest regenerated.'
