In this one building, we would lodge the American superintendent and his 'family, one American instructor and twenty-five (25) Egyptian young men. Third Proposal: In the event of the Trustees being unable to assign any property to the University for the development of a Hostel, request is made for a monetary grant. The amount which would be required to supplement what the University would itself be able to provide, is approximately LE 500. (Five hundred Egyptian pounds.) Sup-portlm Arguments; In support of these proposals, all of which aim at the establishment of a Hostel in connection with the American University, we would respectfully submit the following considerations: (1) The Hostel plan is essential to the University program. Without it the Christian influences and character building processes of the University simply fail of adequate realization. It is not possible to overhaul character adequately by the Influences of a day school. A Hostel is necessary. (2) The University has been unable hitherto to finance a Hostel. The cost is estimated at LE tOOQ. If the Trustees will furnish one half of this cost or provide the equivalent in property accommodations, the University hones to meet the Increased cost of supplying the staff, furnishings and loss in operatioh. (3) The student body involved is representative of the most important and influential classes of Egyptian official and social life. An analysis of a recent enrolment revealed the fact that among the students, 2 were sons of Governors of Provinces, 3 of Mayors of Towns, 4 of Judges of the Superior Court, while 24 were sohs of Pashas or Beys. It is a far-reaching opportunity to carry Christian influences to the highest levels of Egyptian life and it is a pity not to seize the unique opportunity which a Hostel affords for influencing most profoundly the life of this rising generation. For these and other reasons the Council of the American University at Cairo earnestly hopes that your Trustees may be able to assist the University along the lines set forth in this letter.
