Religious Aims: I have written at such length on this subject in my 171170-77757-15, that I really have nothing to add, save to emphasize our eagerness to have on the staff some Religious Director or College Pastor, such as Trowbridge, who would bring to this problem the advantages of experience, special training and both the full time and strength of one man reserved wholly for leadership in this important department. 8. Hostel and Dormitory: Here also I would refer to my letter of May 15, to emphasize the importance and perplexity of this subject. 9. Harmonious Relationships: I have already referred to my giving some considerable lime to this whole subject. It is indeed an important one. Any new organization establishing itself must count on the necessity of explaining itself to other organizations of remov-ing misapprehensions and perhaps of defending its legitimate right to live and "have a place in the sun." The American University at Cairo has had occasion to do this in a good many directions. The Trustees will remember the very extended and difficult negotiations with the British Government a few years ago. Today governmental relations are very friendly whether with British or with Egyptian officials. Agains, there is the question of relationship to the Vissions in Egypt. Here the past summer has brought to light the need for some coordination with one of these Missions, namely the American United Presbyterian. After a most careful study of the situation, the only two points of criticism discoverable are, first, that the University is not under the direct control of the Mission and secondly, that in some of its financial appeals the University may have drawn upon sources formerly claimed by the Mission's own work. On the first point, of course, all that can be done is to point out teat the University was made an interdenominational project by action of the United Presby-terian Assembly and for reasons which are so potent that if the question were before us for decision today, a similar conclusion would be reached. As to the University drawing upon Mission funds, I believe this is due to a false impression as to the University's sources of income, and the false supposition that such funds would have been available for the Mission. These criticisms are mentioned here because they have seemed more noticeable than usual this summer and echoes of them may even reach America. Another reason for mentioning trem is to point out that a solution of these problems of relationship may be hoped for both through the constitution of the Board of Advisors which. our By- Laws call for and through a Committee which the American Mission has itself appointed. 10. Conclusions In conclusion, may I voice two deep con-victions: The first is that our University opportunity is over-whelmingly great. For influencing Islam and the Arabic speaking world, I can see no more strategic place than Cairo and no more influential method tran higher education.
