Ewart Hall. Dr. Toepfer reported that a review of sample seat designs in October resulted in the identification of one possibly acceptable locally manufactured model that will cost $350 per seat, and two others made of imported parts assembled locally at $800 per seat. When the President returns to Cairo an estimate of the full cost of renovating Ewart Hall will be available, and it can then be decided which aspects - seating, painting, lights, and sound system among them - can be funded given the moneys currently available. In response to a question from Mr. Aldrich, Mr. Merchant said that a fundraising campaign offering a seat with the donor’s name inscribed on a plaque for a contribution of LE 250 each had been conducted, but sufficient funds were not collected and now that prices have risen so high these donors are wondering what became of their seats. Dr. McDonald commented that this is a potentially handsome hall which is used heavily for assemblies, English language testing, and cultural and musiccd events; its schedule will have to be disrupted in order to carry out the renovation. 4. Campus Planning Dr. Toepfer rep>orted that the long-term campus planning effort is proceeding. It appears that at least one more major academic building will have to be constructed because space is still very tight. Potential sites for this building were discussed. 5. Renovation of Falaki Hostel Dr. Toepfer reported that planning for this building has taken longer than we would like but that it is complicated and sensitive because of the need to determine uses for space around campus vacated by units moving to the Falaki building. Dr. Gibson is talking with the various academic departments concerned, and it now appears that two or three departments will be moved there. The estimated cost of remodeling this building is $900,000. An application for ftmding has been submitted to AID/asha, but if these funds do not come through AUC funds will have to be used, comprised of $200,000 originally designated for air conditioning to be reallocated to general renovation costs, and $700,000 drawn from plant fund reserves. The committee was asked to approve a resolution authorizing transfer of these funds. Mr. Hinds asked whether approving the resolution at this stage might not result in AID not providing the requested funds. Mrs. Covey explained that on the one hand AID likes to know an institution has funds it could allocate to another purpose if AID funded the renovation, and that this is the kind of project they like to fund. On the other hand, with new directors and new guidelines, AID will be providing AUC with less funds in the future. Dr. Toepfer added that while we won’t know the outcome of the AID/asha application until Summer 1992, work has to begin now on the Falaki building. After agreeing that the propos^ resolution would be modified to include reference to the possibility that funding will be forthcoming from AID/asha, it was moved, seconded, and voted that the following Resolution be approved: RESOLUTION: The Board of Trustees of the American University in Cairo approves the application for AID/ASHA funds for $900,000 for the renovation of the Falaki Hostel building, but in the event such funds do not become available approves the transfer of $700,000 from plant fund reserves to a new project account within unexpended plant funds for the renovation of the Falaki Hostel building, and the reallocation to that account of $200,000 previously set aside for the air conditioning of the building
