Board of Trustees -7- March 4, 1988 6. Report of the Campus Planning & Housing Committee: Mr. Bacon. Mr. Bacon reported on the following projects: A. Heliopolis Building Purchase - Mr. Bacon reported that the owner of the building in Heliopolis which the Board had approved for purchase had effectively doubled the price (from LEl.3 million to ,LE2.6 million) and refused to sell. Other buildings in the area are currently being investigat-ed. The motion was made and seconded to allow the Administration to purchase another building suitable for DPS operations in that area of Cairo on the basis of terms and within the amount already authorized by the Board at its November 1987 meeting. This motion was approved. B. Sheikh Rihan Building - Discussions on the use of the Sheikh Rihan building have concluded that the second floor should be used for the University Library's special collections and the third floor for classrooms. It is estimated that from LEl.3 to LE 2.0 million will be needed to renovate the building and Dr. Pedersen said that at a later date he would request authorization to spend up to LE 2.0 million for these purposes. C. Jameel Center - Mr. Bacon reported that the Jameel building will finish on schedule (August, 1988) at a cost of $5.5 million. Since there is $1.5 million of accumulated interest on the original gift of $5 million to construct the buildings, $1 million will be left in endowment for the building. D. New Dormitory - Mr. Bacon reported that five bids had been received for the construction of the new dormitory with the two lower bids coming in higher than anticipated. The estimated cost of the furnished building is now computed to be roughly $8.5 million. With $4.6 million coming from AID and other sources and a $1.6 million request currently being considered by AID/asha, the Board would have to take the responsibility to raise an additional $2.0 to $2.5 million. Sheikh Adham suggested that the University might wish to redefine the requirements for the dormitory in order to lower costs. Other Trustees also suggested that perhaps the project should be examined in some detail to see if facilities of that size were justified.
