11. Reorganization of the Social Research Center Dr. Toepfer summarized the information paper regarding the re­organization of the Social Research Center and introduced the Center director. Dr. Saad Nagi. Dr. Toepfer reported remarkable progress with the Center and cited more than $1 million in new funding brought in as well as collaborative research relationships that have been developed with universities in the U.S. including Harvard, Princeton and Ohio State. Emphasis has included research in population, poverty, income distribution, health and related issues. Collaboration with disciplines within AUC has also occurred and joint faculty appointments are planned. A graduate assistanship program has attracted interest from other AUC departments. Mr. Hyde asked about factors affecting the longer term funding prospects for the SRC. Dr. Nagi replied that the main inhibiting factor was that salary levels offered are not attractive to U.S. and European scholars even with 3 year contracts. Mr. Hyde noted that the report did not indicate involvement in economic issues. Dr. Nagi replied that the scope of research was confined to economics as a related issue to such subjects as poverty but not to macro economic considerations. ' 12. Criteria for the Selection of Honorary Degree Recipients Dr. McDonald and Dr. Gibson briefly summarized the subject of the information paper. No discussion followed. 13. Awarding of Tenure to Dr. Hisham El Sherif Dr. McDonald and Dr. Gibson summarized the qualifications of Dr. Hisham el Sherif for tenure and indicated their support for the Resolution. It was then moved seconded and unanimously voted that the following Resolution be approved: Resolution: The Board of Trustees of the American University in Cairo approves the tenure of Dr. Hisham El Sherif as of September 1992. 14. Awarding of Tenure to Dr. Samv El Akabawy Dr. McDonald and Dr. Gibson summarized the qualifications of Dr. Samy El Akabawy for tenure and indicated their support for the Resolution.
