This is a highly important step toward making AUt an outstanding research center on Egypt and the area. AUC also will , be receiving over a period of seve.ral years the library of Professor Issawi. Dr. Issawi is one of America's outstanding experts on the Middle East, and the recipient of an honorary degree from AUC last year. The library of a total of about 4000 volumes, mostly 20th century, will materially add to the good collection we already have. COUNSELLOR OF THE UNIVERSITY The Minister of Education has, with my approval and the concurrence of the Executive Committee, appointed Dr. Mohamed Nagy Shatla, as Counsellor of AUC, in accordance with the Protocol, as of February 1. Dr. Shatla currently is a Professor of Plant Pathology at Ain Shams University. He was Minister of Supply and Home Trade from 1983 to 1986, Governor of Kafr El Sheikh governorate from 1981-1983, and Vice President of Menoufia University from 1980-1981. previously he held a number of professional positions in Egypt. He has a B.Sc. in Agriculture from Cairo University, and an M.Sc. and a Ph.D. in Plant Pathology from Louisiana State University, and pursued post doctorate work at Wisconsin in 1965. He is married and has three children - two boys and a girl. We expect him to be at most of the Board sessions so that all of you will have an opportunity to become acquainted with him. Dr. Shatla replaces Dr. Hussein Fawzy who has ably served the University since 1971, first as Sequestrator, since 1974 as Counsellor, and more recently also as Chief Administrative Officer. Dr. Fawzy's role in AUC has been a highlysignifica~t one~ He was importantly involved in the conclusion of the negotiations of the Protocol that governs AUC's status in Egypt. He has been a strong right hand in advising me and the University on matters within the country. And his assistance to AUC in its relations with various Egyptian ministeries has been exemplary
