Dr. Pedersen briefed the Board on the plagiarism case involving Dr. Soha Abdel Kader and informed them that she had requested a transfer from the Social Research Center to the Public Relations Office and the transfer was approved. He also advised the Board that . Egyptian faculty were disturbed about the mandatory retirement policy and differential pay and that they were proving to be difficult issues. . II. Report of the Development Committee - Mr. Hedlund reported that total cash received in 1988/89 totaled roughly $1.4 million. Gifts from Egypt and the U.S. remained at roughly the same levels, but, as had been noted earlier, gifts from Saudi"Arabia and the Gulf have been declining. Mr. Hedlund and Dr. Pedersen had recently met with Kamal Adham in order to plan strategies for fund raising in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf. Mr. Hedlund reported on the priority fund raising projects of the University: Dormitory Project - There is roughly $3 million left to raise on the Dormitory Project. AID/ash a has been requested to provide $691,500, leaving $2.24 million to be raised from private sources. A fund raising goal of $2.5 million has been set to cover the balance plus any soft pledges or inflationary costs. Mr. Hedlund and Dr. Pedersen met with Trustee Kamal Adham to plan strategy for the raising of $2.5 mil­lion from individuals in the Middle East or elsewhere (25 individuals giving $100,000 each). Mr. Hedlund asked if the Trustees had any suggestions. Library Endowment - The general library endowment is the highest endowment priority for AUe. The established goal is to raise a minimum of $1 million ($1.3 minimum if possible) and to raise a $500,000 endowment for books on Egypt and Islamic art and architecture for the Special Collections Library. For the general library endowment $560,000 has been raised. No funds have yet been raised for the special collection. More than $850,000 was raised in current funding in 1988/89. A gift opportunities booklet has been prepared by Dr. Pedersen, Mrs. Miller, and Mrs. Desforges. The pooled income fund is doing well and Mr. Crary is preparing a memorandum on estate planning to be dis­tributed to the Board. 12. Report of the Adult Education Committee- Mr. Hyde advised the Board that the Committee had asked Dean Brown to present to the Committee at the February meeting a report showing the nature and scope of current CACE activities and those directions in which the CACE expected to move in the future. In_general the Division of Public Service and other CACE programs were well attended and . appeared to be operating smoothly. Mr. Hyde said that a search for an Egyptian to direct the DPS was nearing completion.
