MINUTES OF THE PUBLIC RELATIONS COMMITTEE MEETING February 5, 1986 Present: Walter E. MacDonald, Hermann F. Eilts, C. Robert Devine, Theodore S. Bacon, Richard F. Pedersen. Also attending: Dr. James F. Pelowski, Mrs. Janet Desforges, Dr. Thomas Lamont, Mr. W. Mark Linz, Dr. Mohamed Allam, Dr. Yehia El-Ezabi, Mr. Brett O'Brien (minutes). Meeting: Wednesday, February 5, 1986, 4:00 p.m., Alumni Lounge, Hill House. 1. Mr. MacDonald, Chairman, called the meeting to order, and the minutes of the October 30, 1985, meeting were approved. 2. The first item for discussion concerned the book on the history of AUC. Mr. MacDonald stated that the text of the book has been reviewed and has been given a positive assessment. He said that besides modifying some aspects of the religious influence during the early years of the University, modifying some other sensitive material, and updating and revising the newer sections, only minor reV1S10ns were left to be made. A dust cover and photographs are now needed for the book, and Mr. MacDonald suggested that Mr. Linz coordinate these items. ~ Mr. MacDonald thought that the goal now is to have the text of the book completely finished within 30 days. Comments should be given to Mr. Murphy and the copy editor as soon as possible. He stated that if the book were at the press within 60 days, it would be possible to hold a large book party in New York in the fall, around the time of the trustees meeting. Dr. Eilts asked whether any thought had been given to changing the title to something other than The History of AUC, or of adding a subtitle. Mr. MacDonald said that he was open to suggestions on this issue. Dr. Pedersen mentioned that the subtitle "Bridge of Understanding" had been suggested in the past. He also stated that since the book would probably be purchased by alumni or given away as gifts, the title The History of AUC is appropriate. 3. The next topic for discussion was the Presidential Medallion. Mr. MacDonald presented the medallion to the committee, and mentioned that at this point only a gold chain was needed for it. He thought that this medallion should be worn by the President at important University events. Dr. Pedersen suggested that he wear the medallion at commencement on February 8th. Mr. MacDonald said that the medallion will be presented to Dr. Pedersen at the board meeting. He then discussed the medallion specifications, and said that smaller medallions could be given as awards to employees, speakers, or honorary degree recipients. Dr. Pedersen brought up the issue of copyrightjng the emblem, and mallY of the committee members thought it would be a good idea. Mr. MacDonald also presented the committee with AUC T-shirts and thought that these could also be used as gifts
