It Board of Trustees -3- May 22, 1986 4. Report of the Development Committee: Mr. Hedlund. Mr. Hedlund briefed the Board on the status of the campaign. To date $19.18 million have been raised towards the $22 million total. Proposals totalling over $6 million are currently under consideration by donors. Ms. Mary Iskandar has visited Jordan and Europe where she hopes to raise $100,000. Total Trustee giving to date in the campaign is $2.9 million. In order to reach the goal, the Trustees must increase their efforts. If each Trustee could devote 15 minutes per week to assisting in fund raising efforts, the Board will certainly reach its goal. Mr. Crary reported on the Board's Planned Giving Program. The brochures describing the program will be distributed to Trustees shortly, and Trustees were asked to provide Mrs. Desforges with the names of at least two people who might be interested in the planned giving program. He hoped the Board members who had not already done so would meet with Mr. Douglas White to go over the options available. There was some feeling that the program will be viable in the Middle East as well. An article on planned giving will appear in the next AUC News. Dr. Pelowski discussed the campaign and the strategies for its completion. He emphasized that the success of the campaign would depend upon the efforts and involvement of the Trustees, the President and the Alumni. Recently in Jordan a dinner was held attended by more than 150 alumni and friends. Mrs. Mary Iskandar and Mrs. Andre Wehaiba coordinated the affair and raised $25,000 for the University. In Cairo, the alumni are raising funds for AUC and Ewart Hall by "selling" Ewart Hall chairs. The Alumni Endowed Scholarship Fund would reach $1 million by the end of the campaign. At the present time 2-3% of the alumni are giving and efforts are underway to raise that to 15% by the end of the campaign. A parents' association has been formed and the University hopes to raise $100,000 from parents. In addition, 100% faculty and staff participation in the campaign is being sought. Dr. Pelowski briefed the Trustees about his recent visits to Saudi Arabia and the proposals which were developed for discussions with Ahmed Juffali and Saleh Kamel. Additional fund raising trips to Saudi Arabia are being planned and Mr. Hedlund, Mr. Jungers and Dr. Winder have expressed their willingness to be involved. Plans are also being developed for a trip to North Yemen. On personnel matters, the Board was informed that Wafeya El-Hasani had resigned and that Kate Hughes has had to return to the U.S. Andre Wehaiba has joined the development staff. She will work with alumni and spend six months in Canada and six months in Cairo. I
