The skills and attitudes with which the person relates to the primary "constituencies" of the University, its administrative staff, faculty, students and alumni on the one hand and donors, governmental representatives, etc. on the other, are integral to the University's on-going existence. Although a list of qualifications for such a position as that of the President of AUC could be extensive, in the end, the integrity, style and quality of a given individual, how the various expressed qualifi­cations blend and are balanced in him, and the manner and coherence of his relationships of many different kinds become most essential at the concrete level. ' The committee considered some forty names submitted to it or proposed by its members. All of the names and what was known about the persons were considered. Because of the special situation which was present in the fact of Christopher Thoron's appointment as Acting President for a one-year period, and because of his being among the candidates to be considered, the committee decided to limit its serious consideration to only a few others. Three candidates were seriously discussed and followed up. The committee, either as a whole or through i ts individual members, met and had opportunities to come to know t\vO candidates, and the three members of the committee who went to Cairo met separately with Mr. Thoron there three weeks ago. The three can­didates and their qualifications are provided as background information: 1. Landrum Bolling, President of Earlham College, Richmond, Indiana (Biographical data attached as Annex I) 2. Reuben A. Holden, Secretary of Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut (Biographical data attached as Annex II) 3. Christopher Thoron, Acting President of AUC. The time devoted to reviewing Mr. Thoron's record and performance was more extensive than in the case of the other two candidates. Attached to this report as Annex III is a list of the 27 persons with whom discussions were had about Mr. Thoron.
