3 First, with respect to salary increases, a 10% increase across the board was authorized by the Trustees in February, 1970, with the understanding that the added costs of this increase would be in Pounds, at least substantially . The assumptions on which the increase was authorized have not, however, proven to be true, since new contracts for the current year were written, in some cases, which called for increased dollar expenditures, and a 5% increment for Egyptian faculty members has been announced which would be pay­able in dollars (this being the first time such dollar expenditures were anticipated) . The net effect of the latter action is in the adding of $20,000 to our dollar obligations, if it is put into effect. Mr. Barco repeated that these were $20,000 that we did not have and that such an obligation would be one that would continue from year to year. Dean Crabbs reviewed the history of the 5% dollar increase for the Egyptian faculty . He said that the increase began as a plan developed during President Bartlett's tenure to increase the pound salaries of Egyptians by 10%. An advisory committee (the PPP) was formed to develop recommendations on how the 10% increase in pounds could best be given . The PPP after some 80 hours of discussion on the subject made certain recommendations to the new President, but Mr. Thoron rejected them because he felt they were not admlnistrable. He asked the committee to present new recommendations that were feasible from an administrative point of view. The PPP agreed that the 10% ought to be given, if possible, in a non-taxable form .
