-6- VIII REGULATIONS GOVERNING ENROLLMENT There is no age limit for students at the American University at Cairo. The fact that any entering student must have concluded his secondary education, however, means that few students enter below the age of eighteen. Most credit students will have secured their B.A. degree by the age of twenty-two to twenty-four, and most M.A. recipients will be between the ages of twenty-five and thirty. The University has no housing facilities for students. Therefore all stu-dents are "day students". None the less, residence arrangements may be made through the Office of Student Affairs. During the current year the University is not operating its dining hall, but it is expected that this service will b3 resumed in the future. Many detailed regulations govern admissions direct from secondary schools or as transfers from other institutions of higher learning. These, plus the regulations on readmission, registration and housing are included in Appendix VI, entitled Admission Regulations. IX REGULATIONS GOVERNING STUDENT ACHIEVEMENT ,PROMOTION AND GRADUATION At the American University at Cairo the regulations governing the place-ment of students in class, the advancement from class to class, and the ulti-mate separation of the student from the University through graduation, with-drawal or dismissal follow, in general, the American system of education. The grading system is more detailed, less importance is placed upon the final ex-amination, and more importance is placed upon class attendance and participa-tion than may be the case in a non..American system. This is possible where the classes are small and the teacher-pupil ratio is favorable. In Appendix VII, entitled General Academic Regulations, the more important of such regulations are assembled, Additionäl -regulatiosn of this nature are contained in the University Catalogue and Catalogue Supplement, copies of which are already in the hands of the Ministry. Included in Appendix VII are regulations governing both academic and social probation for both the Undergraduate and Graduate Faculties. It is to be es-pecially noted that "The University reserves the right to require thb withdraw-al of any student at any time if the general welfare of the University commun-ity, in its opinion, seems to demand such action." Up until the present time, April, 1959, the usual time for separation of students who were failing satisfactorily to meet academic and/or social re-quirements (that is, "behavioral" requirements) was at the end of either semes-ter of the academic year. In order, however, better to comply with the prac-tices prevailing in Egyptian education, the University has changed its ruling so that the usual time for dismissal will be the end of the academic year (June) and not the end of the first semester (January)
