first semester of the 1956-7 academic year the completed application must be received by September 15, 1956. if the preceding requirements are niet satisfactorily, the Director of Admis-sions will notify the applicant that, after payment of the application fee of L.E.1.000, he may sit for the entrance examination on one of the following dates : Friday, September 7, 1956 — First English Proficiency Examination . Friday, September 14, 1956 — Second English Proficiency Examination Friday, September 21, 1956 —Third English Proficiency Examination . Friday, September 28, 1956 — This is the last opportunity applicants for ad-mission to the Faculty of Arts and Sciences and the Division of Extension will have to sit for the English Proficiency Exami-nation for the first semester of 1956-7 IMPORTANT — An applicant should be prepared to pay between 30 and 40 Egyptian pounds at the time of regist-ration, October 5 and 6, 1956. ( The exact amount depends upon the student's class standing and the number of courses taken.) No student can be admitted to classes without official notification to the instructors that his fees have been paid. Degree Requirements The Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Science degrees of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences of the American University at Cairo are granted to those students who have earned a total of 120 or more credit hours` with a grade point average of at least 1.0 (a "C" average), and have met certain other requirements such as completion of the senior research project. Ordinarily four years will be required to meet these requirements, with the normal study load considered to be about 15 hours a semester or 30 credit hours each academic year. ' Generally speaking, a credit hour represents in the student's record the successful completion of the work required by a class which meets one hour each week for a semester. The 120 credit hours required are divided as follows : 1. Sixty-one credit hours in requir-ed core courses. 2. Approximately 30 credit hours in the major field. Some of these courses are required, others may be selected by the student in pursuit of his special interests in the major. 3. Approximately 29 credit hours of elective courses. The liberal arts education offered by the Faculty of Arts and Sciences depends a great deal upon basic knowledge in the following core areas (the number of credit hours required •in each area is shown in parentheses) : Arabic (12), English (12), humanities (6), philosophy (15), social science (12), sciences (11, of which 8 will be in laboratory science). During the freshman and sophomore years all students are assigned to two classes each week in the Health and Recreation Department. These classes are planned with emphasis on group games and team sports. Students are also given instruction in the means of maintaining good health. During the second semester of the freshman year each student selects an area of major concentration. At present the major may be selected from one of the following fields of study : chemistry, English literature, journalism, physics-mathematics, economics, history, philoso-phy, and sociology. Although core and major courses will, of course, provide the largest share of the University work, students are of-fered the opportunity to follow other special interests by selecting from courses other than those in the core or major areas. Among the areas of study in which courses may be taken apart from the majors are Arabic, art, biology, music, psychology, and political science. Students are strongly urged, however, to make most of these selections from courses which support, or relate to, their major fields of endeavor
