THE ANt' ICAN UNIVERSITY AT CAIRO FtJNCTION9 OF THE ADKISSIONS OFFICE November 12, 1955 The establishment of a separate Admissions Office should improve the method of selection among applicants, so that the University may provide the learning situation which best fits the kind of service that we intend to offer. In order to make a selection, we must first answer the questions: 1. Whom do we intend to serve? 2. What are we to require as minimum entrance standards to meet the needs of the community? 3. What are we to expect from the accepted applicants once they are with us? The answers to these questions will require self-study committee suggest-ions. Particularly, the answers involve 1. curriculum study, 2. course pro-cedure in teaching methods, and subject content analysis for an American university in the Middle East, where the language of instruction is a second or even third language. Moreover, 4. we will have to analyze accreditation in the light of the B.A. for use in the Middle East as a terminal degree. Accredita-tion for others involves standards of achievement for study on the graduate level in the United States or elsewhere. Though these questions are not solely adxnissio i problems, they do concern the establishment of standards, which in turn conceikns a regularized procedure for determination of admission. To commence an operation that will involve the advice of the "self-study" Committee on Students, we recommend the following principles: 1. That the Admissions Office should ser7e the F.A. & S., the Faculty of Education and the Division of Extension, 2. That the Director of Admissions should establish relations with secondary institutions in Egypt and abroad (Sec para.8) in order to clarify and to promote our service, in return for helpful advice concerning the needs we may meet (This procedure necessitates the preparation and publication of promotional literature for distribution.) 3. That an Admissions Committee should be formed to represent the above units (See el.), 4. That unit heads should clarify their entrance requirements (at the meeting of the Admissions Committee), which should be administered by the Director of Admissions, 5. That a time table for Entrance Examinations and Admissions closure ílates should be printed in literature, well in advance of each academic year
