29 VI. Additional Responsibilities to be assumed by the University. While the University is asking The Ford Foundation for a great deal of support, and while with that support (if it is granted) the University can perhaps do in five years what it would otherwise take twenty-five to accomplish, the University is, it-self, assuming many responsibilities over and above the continuation of its present program. The major ones of those responsibilities are as follows: a) The University will undertake to raise half of the new endowment needed, this amounting to $2,187,500.00. b) The University will assume responsibility for its general improvement, as de3cribed in pages 22-23, While it is difficult to estimate the amount of money re-quired to increase salaries, equalize salaries and perquisites and extend administra-tive services, it is likely that the following estimate is conservative: 1956-57 $15,000.00 1957-58 25,000.00 195$-59 40,000.00 1959-60 50,000.00 1960-61 60,000.00* Total $190,000.00 c) The 'University will undertake to liquidate its present, accumulated deficit of some $450,000.00. This is not counted in the final program totals, however, as it may be secured by the sale of land now in the University9s possession. While it will do this by. the sale of some of its land area on the Pyramids Road (such por-tions as may be sold without making it impossible, later, to build on the remaining portion, if desired), it must also face the immediate responsibility of raising some $50,000.00 annually in new funds so as to avoid falling in debt again. Over the five-year period under consideration that sum will total $250,000.00. d) General improvement of present buildings and facilities is required, be-yond what may be thought of as ordinary upkeep. Such items as improvement of the faculty lounge and dining facility, the creation of a student center, replacement of worn stone steps, will probably cost, in all, "25,000.00. e) The first new major building enterprise for which the University must as-sume responsibility should be a library. It should be constructed in such a manner as to house the special working collections of all the units of the University, an exhibition room fór arts and crafts, a study center for alumni and a unit for the development of a public library, in addition to the normal facilities ordinarily thought of. It can be built in the northwest corner of the campus, balancing the units now on the south side of the central admini's'4 rat'io'rr 'unit. • It will cost at least . 0250,000.00 °to build and equip.
