8 The Ford Foundation will be respectfully requested to support most of the items in these categories. Another category of University development items will contain those projects, large and small, which the University must undertake with the use of its present resc:urces or with the support of funds to be secured from sources other than The Ford Foundation. In each of the categories the suggestions will be organized according to the units of the University. Before describing such items, however, a word should be said about an all-University self--study program, which is already under way. This effort is designed to clarify tŸie nagé and~púrposos of the University, and should lead te the determination, over the next two years, of such basic questions as location (whether at the present site, or Pyramids Road, or both) , representation and relations of £mericans and Middle Easterners in organization and program at all points such as Board, faculty and administrative staff (involving appointment, salary and other perquisites, tenure, retirement, etc.) , make-up of student bodies (including intellectual level of programs, admissions, distribution of students among countries of the Middle East and the West) exchange student program, percentage of women to men, etc:), and relationship of the various units to each other in the University, and of the Uni-versity to Egypt, the Middle East and America. It is already agreed that this self-study program shall be conducted by the faculty with a minimum of "outside" help, and that it be under the direction of the presi-dent. While it is obvious that most of the questions are such as to need continu-ing re-examination, and in that sense critical self-study will always be required, it is also apparent that more attention than usual needs to be given to this type of investigation just now and for several years to come. The conduct of this study, indeed, will be one of the presidentf s major tasks for the time being. It is also agreed that the Social Research Center of the University may be asked to provide research counsel., and perhaps activity at certain points in the self-study. For instance, the Center may be helpful in analyzing the factors upon which a deter-mination of location shall be made*, and it may analyze the need for and probable support of an elementary school that may be placed under the direction of the Faculty of Education to be used as an experimental--demonstration school. Aside from the cost involved in such research counsel and possible activity (except for the two-year dean for the Faculty of arts and Sciences to be mentioned later), the self-study will be conducted through faculty committees and will involve little, if any, extra cost. A. Terminal items in University improvement 1. The Faculty of Arts and Sciences. a) A detailed st idy, reorganization and rebuilding cf this unit is reaui_red. This larger E1 o he University is, perhaps, most basic to its ēn ire prum a, and unusual attention must be paid to its reorganization. While all in the Uni-versity arc convinced of the vital place of this unit, and while all, or at least most, are further convinced that its basic stress should be upon the liberal arts, the unit has actually been permitted more or less to grow into its present state without much apparent awareness of the relationship between what it moans to do and what it is actually doing. * The Center has already submitted a very suggestive "Research Design", dated May 25, 1955, and entitled "Location Perspective.
