Secretary's Report - 3 1.63 on the Sponsors of the University to establish personal acquaintance and to pave the way for special gifts. 11. Somehow we must save the University, as a university. Surely this does not moan large plant or elaborate equipment; but it does mean suitable diversity of offerings and a staff that will command increasing attention within the framework of our Christian purpose. We are not here to note the demise of a delightful dream. Our function is to strengthen the reality of that dream, to see it expressed in ever more tangible form. 12. To that and we might take immediate advantage of at least three items in our favor. They are in the nature of Acres of Diamonds. One is the large public and individual following enjoyed by Dr. Watson which, if tactfully tapped further, should yield additional memorial support. Much the same might bo said of the friends of Dr. McClanahan, a few of whom already have made gifts to the University in his memory. Finally, in our list of former residents and friends of Cairo we have a group of about 150 men and women who are still keenly interested in the University - as well as each other - through their experiences over there and who come together annually for the Cairo Dinner. If more of the Trustees and their wives could meet these former teachers and students at this Dinner, that might intensify interest and support. 13. Finally, by undertaking now a strenuous search for increased endowment, over and above our concentrated work on the raising of the budg-et for current needs, I believe we shall bo able to weather the storm and keep the good name of the American University at Cairo before the people of Egypt as an expression of America's interest in the people of that country and the unselfish devotion of many individual Americans to tho importance of carrying on our form of Christian education.
