To blend this with a thorough working knowledge of English is a double task, yet our reputation in the country is at stake here. Dr. Spencer's coming to Egypt is awaited with eagerness for there is much to appraise here: the journalistic field of Egypt, how large is it? the proper content of the journalistic curriculum? the respective field for English and for Arabic in the journalistic world? These and many other tropics relate to the life of the department. Suffice to submit here the statistics of the department as a whole. Nationalities; Egyptian, 251; Armenian, 37; Greek, 30; Palestinian 23; Adani (Arabian) 8; Italian, 8; British, 7; Russian, 5; French, 4; Transjordanian, 4; Inidan, 3; Maltese, 3; Syrian, 3; Iranian, 2; Spranish, 2; Sudanese, 2; Yugoslavian, 2; German, 2; and one each of Algerian, American, Brazilian, Bulgarian, Czechosolovakian, Irawui, Rumanian, Swiss and Turkish. Religions: Moslems, 115 (28.4%); Orthodox Oriental Church, 125 (30.9%); Protest-ant, 38 (9.4%); Jewish, 99 (24.4%); Catholic 28 (6.9%); Total, 405. II. The School of Oriental Studies The School has been under the direction of Dr. E. E. Calverley, as Acting Dean, during 1944-45. Thus was solved a perplexing problem of how the School could be carried on when Dr. C. C. Adms, the Dean should be in U.S.A. on furlough. The plan of Exchange Professorship, with expenses of travel of Dr. Calverley carried by the State Department has seemed to yield very valuable advantages to the University. Dr. Calverley not only acted as Dean for the School but also contributed rich-ly to the College by teaching and to the Council by helpful counsel and by explain-at many points the viewpoint of the Trustees. He also made a rich contribution to the life of the University in its relations to the outside public by generous entertainment of prominent personalities in the academic circles of Egypt. He organized "The Oriental Society of A.U.C.", whose meetings enlisted from 25 to over fifty in attendance at its monthly discussions. Indeed his was a distinctive gift in discovering those, especially Egyptians, who had a desire to share in learned papers and discussions relating to the Arab and Islamic world. His interest in Arabic books and documents of high historical or theological value was outstanding and enabled him to serve many libraries in America, including the Library of Congress, by discovering and purchasing for them rare and much sought after Arabic books on Moslem history, literature, theology and other topics. During the year the rather extensive opportunity of former years to serve the Armed Forces became more limited but yet the enrollment of students reached 129 as against 104 the preceding year, and the total number of lessons advance from 4,095 in 1943-44, to 4,548 in 1944-45. Particularly encouraging was the increase in missior-ary students, there being 16 as against only 5 the preceding year. The future of the S.O.S. awaits developments in the missionary world after the war, since the School was founded for two parallel purposes: (a) the training of new missionaries in language and Islamics, (b) to become a thinking center for all missions to Moslems.
