we can stress the value of independent judgments and objective approaches." In the first of these years there is studied, from this point of view, the Rise of Monotheism, and in the second year the Rise of Christianity. To develop this latter subject Professor Badeau has produced in mimeographed form an admirable textbook which includes a treatment of the Life and Charac-ter of Jesus. The final year is given to Living Religion in Egypt, a course in which the student is taught to appraise religion as a present reality in the lives of his Moslem, Christian, and Jewish contemporaries. In the first or Sophomore year of the Senior College the men enter upon a study of the Ethics of Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, in which the relation of religion to ethics is thoroughly discussed, and which ends with a review of the ethical theories of the modern world. To the Junior year is assigned a course in the History of Philosophy, which gives an opportunity to present the Christian philosophy. And finally Dr. Watson teaches the Seniors the Philosophy of Religion, with special attention to the contributions of Christianity. Even so brief a review will indicate how many are the avenues of approach of which our teachers avail themselves in their effort to present all of the Christian faith which the student is as yet ready to receive. As Mr. Lum has reminded us, very many students in America leave college with far less knowledge of Christian belief and dthics. And that knowledge has come to them not in the shape of merely formal instruction but usually through the medium of free and frank discussion; for it is recognized by all the Faculty that far more valuable than the acquiring of facts is a gradual change in attitude and temper. III. Everywhere in the mission field the leaders of higher education are faced with the problem of hoy to keep their institutions from being entirely secularized. As colleges expand in size they often find tae majority of their students and a growing number of their teachers are non-Christian. When we add to this handicap a keen competition with government schools and universities from which religion has been eliminated, the difficulty increases. In Egypt the problem is especially acute, for there we find not only the new national-ism which creates obstacles in Turkey and Iran but also the extreme religious sensitiveness of the conservative forces of Islam. In other words, a Christian university in Cairo is solicited by every possible inducement to become merely secular. That our American University, in the face of these combined temptations, has remained as Christian as it is, is a tribute to the ideals and the determin-ation of President Watson and Dr. McClenahan and those fellow-workers who have followed their leadership.. And among those fellow-workers may be counted the members of this Board of Trustees. We must not be content, however, with mere self-congratulation. Our good record has not always been uniformly good, and it can be maintained in the futare only by a clear understanding of the difficulties involved and a vigilant resolution to keep the University a missionary institution with a missionary aim. In that endeavor we can be prudent and wise without being timid, and we can be considerate of the Moslem without being afraid of him. Our ideal, then,is to be flexible and adaptablein choosing our means, but steadfast as to our high ends.
