270 Appendix F Page 2. Almost yearly one can point to a Moslem who refuses to buy a Bible at the beginning of the course but later becomes an active participant in the class discussions. Another result of these courses is that the students accumulate a great store of knowledge on which to build a foundation for their religious faith. I visited these classes and inquired in considerable detail into the various courses that are being taught and the qualifications of the men who teach them. I know of no college in America which has curriculum courses in religion which compare with our own for giving a young man a foundation on which to build his religion. Christian fathers and mothers in this country would be overjoyed if they could send their sons and daughters to an American college which offers the courses in philosophy and religion given by the American University at Cairo. The Hostel Service is held at 8:45 each Sunday Morning. Vihile the early hour is not especially popular with the students, there seems to be a strong sentiment toward this weekly hour of worship. Nay impression was that there were three religions represented; Christian, Moslem and Jewish. Mr. Badeau generally conducts a service similar to college chapel services in our own land. The sermon or talk based on Scripture is informal and practical. If the services throughout the year are similar to the one that I attended, I can well understand that these Sunday morning gatherings fill most acceptably the need for a service for the worship of God. No report of this kind would be complete which does not mention the person-al relationship between teacher and student. This friendly attitude is one of the distinctive contributions which the University makes to education in Egypt. One cannot measure such influences or list them. However, with the fine Christian spirit which prevails in the University faculty at the present time, there is little doubt in my mind that the relationship between the teacher and student counts heavily in the development of Christian character. Our short term teachers are a group of young men of unusually good character. These young chaps are in constant touch with the students in class, in athletics or other extra-curriculum activities, in the dining hall and in the dormitory. Knowing these young men as I do, there is no doubt that the Egyptian student will be different for having come in constant daily touch with these fine up-standing Christians. The fact that we are located in Cairo is an asset which we should never lose sight of. This is the center of Moslem thought. Influence exerted here has its effect on all parts of the Moslem world. then we compare Cairo with other centers of influence in the Moslem world, our location at this important center ranks high in our list of assets. An additional spiritual resource is the fact that the members of our staff spend their time in mingling with Egyptians. They are genuinely interested in the Egyptians and their problems. There seems to be a tendency in some centers for the Americans to teach most efficiently in the class period but when this duty is fulfilled, they withdraw into their own national group and they neither know nor appreciate the people with whom they are working. A certain amount of social contact with one's own colleagues is justifiable but it has been my im-pression that our staff has struck a good balance and is identifying itself with the people of Egypt not as a duty but as a privilege. Continued emphasis on a knowledge of Arabic will help us to continue the very satisfactory situation which obtains at the present time.
