(b) Should the Government Section be conducted in English and in a measure take the place of our Prep Department? (e) Hovy do our B.A. end B.S. diplomas compare in the content and requirements with those issued by the Egyptian State University? (d) What should we do in the matter of Co-education? (The Egypt-ian Ministry of Education is promulgating a regulation that there shall not be coeducation in the Primary and Secondary schools) . THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION: The Department of Education has taken comparatively small amount of time. OFFICIALS AND THE GOVERNMENT: More than ever before, as a result of the extraordinary situations which arose during the past six months, very much time has been required for negotiations with officials The objectivities have been on the one hand to prove that the University was not what it was represented to be: a center of such unwise methods of evangelization as would be repudiated by Moslems, and on the other hand, to maintain the right and function of the University as a Christian instit-ution of learning. The situation has involved much dealing with the Arabic press, particularly that which was in opposition to the Government, and alos in endeavoring to bring our position clearly before the public mind, both within the University buildings and outside. Te undertook to establish our position, if possible, by sympathetic contacts with officials and the Government, without lowering the flag and fundamental purposes of the University. TOURISTS: There has been the minimum number of tourists this past six months, with no outstanding names among them. MISSIONS AND CHRISTIAN COMMUNITIES: In the nature of the situation and in the light of the origin and service of the University, the relations with mission bodies and organized Christianity in Egypt becomes an important element in our work. It includes relationships with the American and British missions, the Y.M.C.A., the Y.W.C.A., the Coptic community, the Protestant Churches and officials, the Bible Societies and many smaller organizations, attendance at Arabic service and participation in them, attendance at the Senate of the Nile, cooperation on committees, close personal friendships with pastors and workers, etc. A part of this service has been to acquaint the younger members of our staff with organized Christianity in Egypt. INTERVIEWS: These have been both within the office and outside, and I often think are the most direct and penetrating services one can have. It means a constant procession of Sheikhs, Effendis, officials, pastors, Alumni, former students, tourists, citizens, teachers, and others. Very little, almost none, of the interviews pertained to matters of business, but rather to better understandings, exchange of opinions, discovery of currents of thought, opportunities for cooperation of our University with others, etc. etc. This past spring there has been much of inquiry of personal matters of faith, Islam and Christianity, and apparently a very large favorable re-action from the spirit of opposition which the press was endeavoring to bring about. Often these interviews give opportunity for bringing together the Egyptian people and our younger staff, introducing the latter the mind and manner of life of the former. :i
