As Egyptian Government Secondary Course had gone down, this has improved: Teaching in English in preparation for college. Apart from this has no market value. Hence effort for scholarships to temptstudents by subsidies. Weakness of Preparatory School - It leads nowhere but to College. Other-wise graduate becomes derelict. Market glutted with Egyptians who have gone no further than secondary level. Present Preparatory School too overloaded with non-Egyptian elements. Needs strengthening on Arabic side and giving preference to Egyptian Moslems, to avoid reputation for denationalizing. C. College Four years in English leading to B. A. This the most important part of our work. All the rest mainly feeders. Main principles agreed on by faculty: 1. Emphasize ability in Arabic 2. Emphasize ability in English 3. Offer four "sequences" instead of free election College offers our beat opportunity to develop intellectual ability and Character. Teaching by Americans and American trained teachers. Quality must be the aim. .Possible criticism:- College course too American and no fitted enough to Near East. Should be more adapted to Egyptian conditions and made more attrac-tive to Egyptians. Some Suggested Remedies a.nd Reforms. 1. Make wholehearted effort (never before) to reform Government Secondary Course, using full-time American superintendent speaking Arabic. Try to inject into it the cultural and ethical ideals which constitute our Christian objective. 2. Adjust Government Secondary Course better to College and vice versa. 3. Improve policy toward Government Secondary - teachers, higher salaries, pensions, etc. 1
