81 President's Report. achievement or perhaps it might be designated "experimentation" and a very inspiritng prospect of future expansion. Indeed, without giving any false im-pression as to inactivity during the past year, it is imperative that thought should be focussed with a deep sense of urgency upon the immediate future of this work. As to trie past year, 14 platform lectures have been given, 9 educational concerts and 6 moving picture exhibitions. Six lectures were given in Cairo and seven in Tanta. The latter course repreEents an extension of our activities beyond the limits of Cairo. The film "Gift of Life" was also loaned to missionary agencies in Turkey which is a form of service which V.E. had not contemplated. In Tanta, the average attendance was 450, made up, roughly, as follau s: one-third Government School students, one-third Government employees, one-third sheiks of the Ahmadiya School, the great Mohammedan school of Tanta. In Cairo the attend-ance averaged 315 and this with the new plan of making at least a nominc l charge for all desiring tickets. The influence of these lectures have been very pen-etrating. That even health lectures undermine Mohammedanism is shown by the fact that after the first two lectures at Tanta, Dr. Fakhry, the University's lecturer, was attacked in the press and by public address .s being an evangelist of the American Mission under guise of a doctor. His life was threatened by anonymous letters and telephone calls, and on two occasions, the police had to be asked to escort him from the station to the hall. However, his per istence in putting forth boldly, yet tactfully, the truth of modern science with regard to sex matters, polygamy, divorce, disease, - the Koran to the contrary notwith-standing, finally won the sympathetic hearing of his audiences, and the course was finished v ithout any accident or violence. Division also cooperated very extensively in the Village referred to in the College section of this report, providing doctor, and also the follow-up by correspondence, of the work The Child Welfare Center is formally under the guidance of the Extension Div-ision. Its interesting and remarkable achievements call for a separate detailed re-port from which a sulirmF-ry would only seem to detn ct, but some idea of the scope of this work may be gni ned from the following statistics: There were 7363 treatments of women and 8054 of children; 897 lessons in health and 57? demonstration baths, 553 houses visited of which 460 were Mohammedan. The little school had 36 girls enrolled. The total amount of money spent for all this work was only $2230, but it must be remembered that an enormous amount of time and labor was poured in freely by Mrs. iicClenahan and her associates as a labor of love. It is only fair to point out that Mr. Wnedell Cleland, the only American att-ached to this Division of Extension, was able to give to direct Extension activities only a small fraction of his time. Supervision of the erection of the new auditorium consumed probably one-half of his time, and he has in addition to that given much time to general University administration and to the interests of the College. V e muat now turn to a consideration of the future, for the completion of the auditorium during the coming winter lays upon us an inescapable obligation to follow up the opportunity which this unique ec_uipment affords. The present budget of the Division of Extension is but $7,020. It provides for but one Americas, with a part time Egyptian helper and a slight amount for office and printing. The most conserv-ative satisfactory estimate for this department, one which was made the basis of several recent appeals to individuals, calls for approximately $25,000 per year for each of the next five years. Certainly a base line of necessary development calls for the provision at once of an associate for Mr. Cleland so that the work may not be imperilled by depending entirely on one man, so that provision may be made for continuing the work in years of Mr. Cleland's furloughs and so that the larg
