MINUTES OF THE FOURTH MEETING OF THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF CAIRO UNIVERSITY New York City, October 2, 1919. 1. ORGANIZATION The Trustees of Cairo University met at the Yale-Princeton Club of New York City at 6:30 P.M. In the absence of the Chairman, Dr. McClurkin, Dr. Hill was elected Chairman pro tem., and in the absence of the Recording Secretary, Mr. Shane, Dr. Robinson was elected Sec-retary pro tem. The following members were present: H. P. Beach, W. I. Chamberlain, R. W. Harbison, W. B. Hill, George Innes, M. G. Kyle, J. H. Lockhart, J. K. McClurkin (arriving later), E. E. Olcott, C. R. Watson; and also as visitors Wendell Cleland and Russell Galt. 2. MINUl'ES The Minutes of the Third Meeting of the Board, on August 7, 1917, were adopted as typed and circulated. 3. ACTION BY CIRCULAR Action taken by Circular letters was approved and spread upon the Minutes as follows: (a) Circular of December 10, 1917: "That the name under which the University is to be incorporated be THE AMERICAN UNIVERI-'ITY AT CAIRO". (b) Circular of larch 12, 1918; "That Mr. Wendell Cleland's services 'vaned to the Armenian and Syrian Relief work from Feb. 15, 1918 until April 15, 1918." (c) Circular of April 13, 1918: "That Mr. Cleland's leave be extended until September 1918." (d) Circular of August 22, 1918: "That Mr. Wendell Cleland be permit-ted to serve the American Red Cross for one year, they to pay his salary for this period." (e) Circular of October 2, 1918: "That Mr. W. Carlton McQuiston be permitted to serve the American Red Cross for one year, they to pay his salary for this period. (f) Circular of October 7, 1918: "That Dr. Watson's continued service of the War Work of the Y.M.C.A. until November 30, 1918, be approved." (g) Circular of December 11, 1918: "That the. Treasurer be authorized to pay to Dr. R. S. McClenahan, Principal-elect of the College of Arts and Sciences, as from January 1, 1919, a salary of $3,000 a year." "Th<<t the Committee in Egypt be authorized to borrow the money in Egypt mortgaging the property to be purchased and also the property already purchased in order to secure funds which may be required in addition to what shall be sent them from the New York Treasury." "That the Finance Committee of the Board of Trustees be authorized to remit out of the present Treasury $70,000 as soon as these stocks and bonds can be converted into money under conditions satisfactory to the Finance Committee." "That a special effort be made to secure gifts in large amounts for the purchase of this land and city site, so that at the launching of the University work in 1920, there may be provided without debt or obligation this splendid site which is regarded as entirely adequate for the city developments of the institution for years to collie." 7
