Biological materials, like nacre and spider silk show exceptionally good mechanical properties. Therefore the biological nanocomposites are used as model compounds inspiring the field of biomimicry and they illustrate the importance of control from molecular level to macroscale by using highly optimized hierarchical structures. The resulting stiff and tough, bio-based nanocomposite materials are desired for many applications, but the combination has proved to be elusive. A good basis for creating such stiff and tough nanocomposites is nanofibrillated cellulose (NFC), which is renewable, abundant and has good mechanical properties.
